Before you can upload any YouTube videos, you’ll first need to setup your own account. Having your personal account will allow you to save favorite videos, compile playlists, like or dislike videos and of course upload your own videos.

Here’s how to setup your account.

Step 1: Click “Create Account”

Go to: http://www.youtube.com and click “Create Account.”

Step 2: Fill Out the Signup Form

Fill out the YouTube signup form.

Step 3: Link Account or Create New Account

If you already have a Gmail account, you’ll be prompted to link that with your YouTube account.

If you don’t already have a Gmail account, just choose a username and password to create one.

You can customize quite a bit about how your channel looks and operates. Here’s how to setup your channel and customize it.

Step 1: Accessing Your Channel

To access your channel, click the little dropdown arrow next to your name in the upper right corner of your screen.

A menu will appear. Click on “Channel.”

The controls for your channel will be laid out along the top. A preview of what your channel looks like will be directly below it.

Step 2: Choosing What Videos Will Appear

While everything else in your channel setup is important, none are as important as this setting. After all, people come to your channel to look at your videos – Everything else is auxiliary.

To choose what videos appear on your front page, go to “Videos and Playlists” in your top navigation menu.

On the left, you can choose what kind of content appears in your channel. You can choose to display just your own videos, your favorite videos and / or your playlist videos as well.

On the right, you can choose the layout type, the main video, what content set is featured and whether or not the video starts playing automatically when someone lands on your channel.

Step 3: Select Your Modules

Your modules are basically the different “components” that make up your channel. For example, if you wanted to put a comment box on your channel, that’d be a module. Modules make it easy to customize the functionality of your channel.

To access your modules panel, click on “Modules” in the top navigation bar.

Check and uncheck the boxes to choose which modules to display. Save your changes and take a look at your channel to see exactly how your channel looks with different modules.

Step 4: Choosing Themes and Colors

Your themes and your colors are what will decide what your channel looks like. Try to use a theme that goes well with your brand’s colors or has the emotional connotations of your brand.

Note: If you’ve seen people using background images in their channels, you might be wondering how that’s done. Unfortunately, for most users, you can only customize your colors. Background customization is currently restricted only to YouTube Partners, publishers with enough volume to have direct advertising deals with YouTube.

To change your themes and colors, click “Themes and Colors” along the top. Click one of the themes and save your changes to see how it looks.

Step 5: Advanced Themes and Colors

Want to do more than just use a pre-set theme? You can.

Start by clicking on “Show Advanced Options.”

Step 6: Channel Settings

Your channel settings are where you can set your channel’s tags, your channel’s title, whether or not it’s searchable, the type of channel you run (YouTuber, musician, etc) and a few more settings.

You’ve put a lot of time into shooting great video and editing it into a masterpiece. Now how do you actually get it online, on YouTube? How do you make sure your video’s settings, such as whether or not people can comment on your video, are set correctly?

Here’s how to upload your video and customize its settings.

Step 1: Click Upload

Once signed into your YouTube account, click “Upload.”

Step 2: Click

Click “Upload video.”

A file selection box will pop up. Choose your video file. Once you’ve selected your file, you’ll see the upload progress box displayed.

Step 3: Enter Your Title and Description

YouTube allows you to edit your title, descriptions, tags, categories and privacy settings all while your video is being uploaded. Customize these settings right below the upload box.

Your title is crucial because it’s what a large part of what people use to decide if they’ll watch your video. Your description is the text that shows right below your video.

Tags and categories will help people discover your video.

Choose whether you want to moderate comments, allow them automatically or not allow any comments at all. Also choose whether or not you want users to be able to vote on comments.

Step 8: Save Changes

There are a few other options you should check out, such as whether or not you want people to be able to embed your video on their own websites. By and large however, after setting up the settings above your video will be ready to go.

Click on “Save Changes” once you’re ready to publish your video.

Congratulations! You’ve now uploaded a video, added a title and description, tagged and categorized your video, setup your thumbnail picture and set your commenting options.

While it doesn’t have fancy effects or advanced video editing features, you can easily paste together different clips of video, add in sound tracks and create an elegant video file all without having to learn any video editing skills.

Here’s how to use YouTube’s video editor.

Step 1: Accessing the Video Editor

Click “Videos” in the drop down box in the upper right corner.

Then click “Video Editor” along the top navigation bar.

Step 2: Adding Videos

Upon entering the video editor, you’ll first see a screen with all your existing videos in them.

Just drag and drop any video clips you want to use in your video onto the video clip.

Step 3: Adding Creative Commons Videos

If you want to use copyright free videos, click on the “cc” button to access YouTube’s wide range of Creative Commons videos. Drag and drop these into your timeline.

Step 4: Adding Music

To add music, first click the music symbol along the top. Hover your mouse over any track and click the “Play” button to preview the track. When you find a track you want to add to your video, just click the “+” symbol next to the track.

Introduction

What is streaming media?

In a nutshell, streaming media are multimedia (e.g., text, audio, and video) that are transmitted through various telecommunications channels (e.g., phone lines, radio signals, and the internet) to end users who, in turn, receives the media in a form which they can readily/instantly view, hear, or read. With streaming, people don’t have to wait for the media to be transmitted fully or load completely before they can see, hear, or read it… portions of the transmitted media become viewable and audible the moment they are received by a telecommunications/multimedia-playback device (e.g., radio, television set, and computer).

If you paid close attention to the examples of telecommunications/multimedia-playback devices, you might have already gotten the idea that streaming media is nothing new. Well, you can’t be any further from the truth! It’s not new to the internet either. Remember RealPlayer? Now, we have sites like Metacafe, YouTube, Vimeo, and Veoh that offer streaming videos. In addition to that, we also have countless internet radio sites that stream radio programs over the internet.

But, and that’s a really big ‘BUT’, due to technological advances, streaming media, or more specifically, streaming video, has recently been experiencing rapid growth and gaining tremendous popularity among internet users and it continues to do so right at this very moment as evidenced by various video sharing and search sites sprouting all over the web like mushrooms.

Live Versus Archived

Streaming videos come in two types. One is these is the archived/pre-recorded video. This is the type that most video-sharing/streaming sites (like the ones mentioned earlier) are offering and is currently the more popular of the two. With streaming archived videos, users can watch their favorite shows at any time they want. In other words, archived/pre-recorded videos can be viewed “on-demand”.

The second type is the live streaming video. When we talk about live streaming videos, we are talking about REAL-TIME. And this is what we are really going to talk about here.

Live streaming video has, time and again, been pitted against archived video with “live” being seen as the underdog every time. Analysts cite video quality as one of the areas in which live streamed videos fail tremendously. In addition, live streamed videos are also seen as lacking in flexibility such that viewers must tie their schedules to the presentations’ airing time to be able to watch it, and they have to watch them entirely or risk missing out on some details.

But, let’s take a look at this from a different perspective…

If you’ve been to sites that offer live streaming videos, you might have noticed that a lot of them have a “chat box” alongside the video frame. THAT enables you, as a broadcaster, to be in touch with your audience on a personal level (just as your audience can communicate with each other) in real-time.

Just imagine all the possibilities that can come with that! You will be able to understand your audience better and get new ideas from them. You can also instantly give answers and clarifications to their queries. And, since everything’s happening in real-time, you will be able to modify your presentation at a moment’s notice to suit your audience better. Now, this changes the definition of “flexibility” quite a bit, doesn’t it?

And no matter what the comparative studies are currently showing, with technologies advancing as rapidly as they are, we can only expect live video streaming to get better quality-wise over time.

The Future of Internet Video

According to a forecast on global IP traffic released by Cisco in August 2007, video will contribute to a 21% compound annual growth rate in business IP across wide area networks from 2006 to 2011 as high-speed broadband connections become more commonplace. Along with that, the bandwidth consumed by internet/online video streaming and downloading will grow from 9% of all internet traffic in 2006 to 30% in 2011.

A more recent article on http://www.readwriteweb.com (by Sarah Perez, published in September 8, 2009) says that online video consumption will be measured in exabytes by 2017. An exabyte, by the way, is equivalent to one billion gigabytes or one quintillion bytes.

To see your channel and the links you’ve attached to it, simply click on your channel’s name under My Channels tab in the Channels page.
